JUDGE MARGIE WILSON PICKS AINSLEY COBBLESTONE LIKE A CHARM (“Miller”)
TO TOP LINE-UP OF 153 DOGS FOR BISS

by Sharon Spellman

“Miller”, a blue roan boy bred by Karen Fitzpatrick, Susan Karsch and Deb Mauterer, celebrated his 11-month birthday by taking Best in Sweeps to kick off the 2008 ECSCA National conformation classes on Tuesday, April 15th. Sired by Hob (CH Brasswinds Ego Trip) and Charm (CH Ainsley’s Lucky Charm), Miller debuted at the Fitchburg, Mass. shows in November, capturing a 3 pt. major over specials, in front of judge Dana Cline. Since then he has only been in the ring twice (Boston and Spaniel Club), and has spent most of his time snuggling up on the sofa at home, next to Susan Karsch. He’s a “sweet, sweet dog who just wants to cuddle” says Susan. “Everyone who comes to my house looking at other puppies wants to go home with him,” Susan adds.

Susan and Karen, his co-owners, have no immediate plans for Miller’s next appearance in the ring. For the time being they seem pleased just to bask in this special achievement. Miller is shown by Karen and is named for her fiance’s best friend, Tom Miller, who passed away from pancreatic cancer shortly after the litter was born. Miller’s two littermates, Sara (owned by Deb Mauterer) and Penny (owned by Debi Decker,) are also headed into the show ring.

Mrs. Wilson pointed to Chris Dooley’s orange and white bitch, Oldwest Change of Hue, “Henna”, for both her Reserve Best in Sweeps and Best of Opposite, setting a new record for the breed.  Henna went BISS at the National in May 2007, shortly after she turned six months. Due to the slightly earlier date for this year’s National, Henna was eligible to compete in Sweeps this year, too.

“It’s unbelievable,” says Chris. “I just feel so fortunate!” Henna is just one point shy of her championship title, after winning two 5 point majors at the Greenville, SC shows in February, going Best of Breed over more than a dozen specials.

Henna was sired by Cubby (CH Timeless Traveller ECM), out of Demi (CH Kabree Oldwest Tantalizing). “Demi was 6 and this was her last litter. I wanted to breed to Cubby for years,” notes Chris. Henna’s two littermates did not survive and she was raised as a singleton. When she was only 8 weeks old she narrowly escaped death after falling into a pond at Chris’s home, spending several days at the emergency vet’s office. Chris was told the puppy’s chances of survival were “very slim”, but her fighting spirit prevailed.

Winner of Best Veteran in Sweeps was Bonnie Threlfall’s Chigger, CH Edgewood Vendetta, who turned 10 last month. Tracey Deyette’s Adam, CH Ashbrook Aristocrat, who will celebrate his 12th birthday at the end of April, took Reserve. Best of Opposite was the Brangers’ CH Carnaby Charisma.

“The best puppy and the best veteran both had the same body type,” notes Judge Margie Wilson, who chaired last year’s National.  “They are short-backed with good rib spring and they stand over themselves and are well-balanced.  They also had pretty heads.”

“To judge this was the thrill of a lifetime,” says Mrs. Wilson. “The overall quality was outstanding.  It hurt me to make cuts.” Noting that she will be staying for the rest of the week, Mrs. Wilson said “I’m curious to see what Jim Reynolds will do now.”
